The Virgin Summits Tibet 2003 Expedition was our most ambitious and expensive project to date and it would not have been possible without our sponsors' assistance. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all the organisations that supported us, especially W.L. Gore & Associates who were our largest sponsor.

The majority of our sponsors return to support us year after year and we are always seeking new partners for our ventures, so if you feel you may be able to help or would like to discuss what we can offer you as a sponsor, please contact us

Visit W.L. Gore

This well known outdoor fabric manufacturer runs the Shipton Tilman annual award scheme that offers support to small, lightweight teams attempting innovative objectives that seek to extend the boundaries of outdoor endeavour. In 2003 the Virgin Summits Tibet Expedition was fortunate enough to win this prestigious award and was given a cash grant of US$8000.

We are extremely grateful to W.L. Gore & Associates for this fantastic support and it is gratifying that they share our enthusiasm for the project, especially in light of the numerous high quality expeditions that also applied for the award.

Visit the MEF

Visit The BMC

As two of our major sponsors in the past, the Mount Everest Foundation and the British Mountaineering Council continue to provide our teams with financial assistance, by generously awarding us cash grants of £800 (MEF) and £2600 (BMC). Their support is always important to our expeditions and is greatly appreciated.

Encouraging mountaineers to explore new areas and make first ascents is extremely worthwhile and an indication of the commitment shown by these organisations to small scale, low impact, Alpine style climbing throughout the world.

Visit Helly Hansen

After offering the Raksha Urai Expedition a generous clothing and cash grant under their UK based annual award scheme in 2001, this well known outdoor clothing manufacturer continues to give Virgin Summits teams their support. In 2003 they made a cash donation in conjunction with the Alpine Club of Canada, through their Mountain Adventure Award programme and their continued assistance is greatly appreciated.

Visit the Alpine Club of Canada

A new sponsor for Virgin Summits teams, the Alpine Club of Canada kindly awarded our Tibet expedition a cash grant in conjunction with the Helly Hansen Mountain Adventure Award programme. Given the small Canadian contingent in our expedition, we would like to express our thanks for their generous support.

Visit The Canadian Himalayan Foundation

Sponsors of a number of previous ventures, the Canadian Himalayan Foundation again assisted our team by putting their equipment cache in Kathmandu at its disposal. As lightweight, self supported expeditions, access to specialist equipment is always greatly appreciated and we would like thank the CHF for their continued assistance.

Visit Terra Nova Equipment

Also sponsors in previous years, Terra Nova Equipment very generously provided us with equipment from their Extremities range free of charge. All items including hats, gloves and socks performed incredibly well and played a significant part in avoiding frostbite high on the mountain. They also loaned us three Ultra Quasar tents for base camp use and exploratory trekking.

The Terra Nova Equipment website can be found at

Visit Ottakar's

Another new sponsor for 2003, Ottakar's provided a selection of ten novels for the expedition members to read at base camp and a cash donation of £250, both of which were greatly appreciated.

Visit Gulf Air

Gulf Air generously increased the baggage allowance for the British members of the team from 20kg to 50kg on the flight from London to Kathmandu.

Given the expense of airfreighting equipment to Asia, their support is greatly appreciated and saved the expedition a considerable amount of money.
